Henrik Ibsens A boos House is play that I certainly make merryed knowledge for the number 1 time in this class, and have continued to enjoy reflecting on the themes illustrated within. I related the most to the character of Nora, which I suppose is a natural reaction to the protagonist character. trance I definitely understand the criticism she has received during in class discussions for her ignorant character and dishonesty, I foolt see her as an entirely unrelatable character either. I dont particularly like or agree with Nora either, nevertheless I do sympathize with her situation as a victim of the circumstances around her. It is evident through her interactions with Torvald that she occupies an insufficient role in the Torvald family and is more a daughter than a wife for Torvald and more of a doll in disembodied spirit than anything an empty physical representation of a woman. This issue appears to be deeply rooted as well, tracing back to Noras relationship with her father as a child. As she realizes by the plays end, she never really advanced beyond the stages of a child, but was instead passed on from her father to Torvald, who acts as Noras second father.
Keeping in mind the clock in which the play takes place, I was nonetheless taken aback by much of the diction Torvald utilizes which subtly subdues Nora while at the same time revealing his gender values that are such an inbuilt part of his character. He consistently refers to her by pet call like his songbird or his little squirrel which imply non only inferiority but a sense of self-will as well. At the beginning of the play I ensnare his reaction to her overspending quite telling when he said: Nora, my Nora, that is nevertheless like a woman… Yet in rancor of the obvious lack of mutual respect within the Torvald marriage, Noras every endeavor is in some way an attack to better satisfy Torvalds needs or wishes.
