Pete Weirs film the Truman Show offers us a critical view at reality television and the dangers associated with it. Weir positions the Audience to be able to question what is real and what is fake. He indigences us to be aware that reality television is non actually real but controlled and dodged by the media.
Weir affairs the character of Marlon, Trumans best friend, to show the extremes of television habit.
Marlon is an actor on the show, and the directors use him as a direct channel to Truman, so that they may influence him however they see fit.
A scene, which represents the theme of media manipulation, is when two Marlon and Truman are sitting on the end of the bridge and Truman attempts to let off to his best friend that there is something weird going on in his life, that he didnt quite understand. This scene occurs when Truman begins to work that all is not what it seems in his world.
Although Truman has his suspicions because of what he has heard and seen, Marlon, with the overhaul of the Directors and his life long friendship is able to lie and manipulate Truman convincing him to believe nothing is wrong.
Weir shows us Cristof communicating to Marlon during his discourse with Truman; this is to indicate to the audience the level of manipulation by the media. Although the manipulation that occurs within the Truman show is beyond that of which occurs in real life, by exaggerating the control that television has over Truman, by doing this Weir is able to suck up the influence and manipulation in his life.
By exaggerating to the point of implausibility, the come of manipulation that the media has in terms of what is shown to the general public. The attempts by Cristof, who represents the media, manipulates Truman to hold open him from leaving Sea haven becomes almost comical.
