Diwali is possibly one of the loveliest festivals of India. Its the festival of lights. both city, town and village is turned into a fairy land, with thousands of flitter oil lamps, candles and electric lights, illuminating homes and public places. It is celebrated from the Union most part of India in Kashmir to the southernmost tip of Kanyakumari. Diwali binds Indians together in a joyous and festive mood, with lights, sweets and crackers vie a very prominent part. The first Diwali was when thousands of earthen oil-lamps were lit at night in Ayodhya many thousands of years ago. It was planned and make by Bharata, the younger brother of Rama. It was the jubilancy of the return of Rama (faithful and passion son of queen regnant Dasaratha) from his 14 years of exile. Bharata promised to celebrate if Rama returned on the dot after 14 years and not a daylight late. If Rama returned one day late from his exile, then Bharata would have killed himself, as promised. This festival also celebrates Ramas coronation to the throne as the righteous king. Last but not the least, this festival is the celebration of Good over Evil.
Rama defeated and killed Ravana (the King of Lanka) and returned to be the King of Ayodhya. Diwali celebrates the laying of rock like foundation of governance by a ruler who first governed himself by dint of swaraj (self governance) and atmasayama (self control) before put together about governing others, that is, it celebrates the utter lack of obsession with government agency and its arbitrary manifestations.
In brief, Diwali is the celebration of noble behavior among gracious beings, of lighting the light within, of living in oneness, of supreme inclination between the ruler and the ruled, of laying the foundation of prosperity through morality.
