The second stanza poses the question of liveliness itself to which Owen forces the reader to ponder whether in that location is any point to living. The first line, Think how it wakes the seeds acts as a metaphorical link to the fair weather as the harbinger of life itself obtaining powerful life giving abilities. Linking thoughts about the sun, nature, growth and life are used to show the value of what has been so mindlessly and easily destroyed. Owen concludes that the long evolutionary process of creation has been a waste. Line 11 is the first of three rhetorical questions in the second stanza, where Owen fully expresses his feelings of the futility of war. In line 12 the poet uses clay, utter line 9, as a metaphor for man, questioning whether a person grows into an adult unless to die in war. In the poems penultimate line, Owen describes the suns rays as blank, or complacent. He wonders what the point was in life being created on earth at all, if so many men are killed when their adult life has nevertheless just begun. The poem ends with the third rhetorical question, creating a common sense that Owen cannot lay hold of (on the purpose of life on earth if it merely leads to soldiers dying senselessly. The poignant ironic tone is used to comprehend this loss.

The assonance of home sown and wakes…clay evokes a mournful tone. The faction of both polysyllabic whispering, unsown and monosyllabic words, woke, potent, and stir alters the pace and tone of the poem. Owen needs to communicate the emotional garishness of what has happened in the war and the harsh use of the hard c in the clay of a cold star emphasises the poets frustration and fury. The last line contrasts to the beginning of the poem to the sun being kind and gentle to now having pointless and fatuous sunbeams to which Owen questions if life is worth anything at all.
